The Word of the day project (henceforth referred to as the wotdp) is something I did once write, but the project died very quickly. Anywho, I'm currently working on bringing it back to life. Unfortunately, the vocab lists fro the original project are no longer in our midst, so it will be from scratch.

Basically, I am going to give a list of features it will include.

+ optional subscription via email to daily words in your inbox
+ optional RSS feed updates
+ [MAYBE] optional iGoogle gadgets generated daily.
+ Words daily in each language
+ Each language has different words each day
+ Example sentence provided (at this stage only with an English translation)

Basically, the way it'll work is one of two ways:
- Any registered member can use their email address to subscribe to as many languages as there is available.
- You can use RSS feeds to get the latest words on as many languages as you would like

How words will be added:
- Any registered member can login and access the control panel (at this stage. Abuse might lead to a special group only)
- You will be allowed to specify any word you want in English and any word in the target language. You will also need to provide an example (a correct example!).
- Entries will be editable.
- Once there is more than 30 (at this stage) entries, the language will become "available".
- Each word must appear before it resets.

If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know within the next few weeks so I can plan ahead.

Thanks, and I'll be counting on all of your help to help fill these out.

Smile

The project is looking good so far.

The main thing I added which I never mentioned before is moderation. All words added to the lists must now be approved by our brand spanking new wotdp moderators (who appear as light blue on the form).

This means, anything incorrectly filled in, offensive or what ever, will either be edited or removed by the moderator. Once all is okay they will be accepted into the lists.

Also, I intend to have a report content button on any generated daily results so that anyone who finds anything that slipped past the moderator, it will be remarked for moderation.

In the future, I want to introduce vocabulary levels. Basically 1, 2 or 3 where the user can choose, for example, to subscribe to all of Swedish and German, but maybe only Levels 1 and 2 of French. What do you's think of this idea?

I like this idea. It would work well with learning a lang, without preventing the recieving of any level word for those who are just interested in getting new words.

Ok. Timeline time. This is what needs to be done and in what order. I'll cross it off as I complete things.

- List page
  - Add moderator links to remoderate
- First parts
- Moderator Panel
  - List x-flagged
  - Delete word function 24-01-10
  - Edit word function 27-01-10
  - Approve word function 30-01-10
  - Moderator notes field
- Fill 30-01-10
  - Fill one language to over 30 words for testing purposes. First in first serve. More on this later. 30-01-10
- Index
  - List languages available for subscribing to 31-01-10
  - Link to static html versions of the wotdp
- Rotator
  - Random generator 31-01-10
  - Override page (only admins need to know about this) 31-01-10
  - List resetter
  - Emailer
  - PM'er
  - Cron jobs
- Subscriptions
  - Set up "my subscriptions" page (On index)
  - Allow Email and PM subscriptions
- Write help docs
  - Contribution docs
  - Use docs
- Sufficient Content for Beta Release
- Bug report
  - Build bug reporting form
- Possible hiatus
- Word reporting (as incorrect)
  - Links on the RSS and XML as well as PM and Email
  - Reporting functions in moderator panel
- Possible hiatus
- Language levelling
  - this will take some time to think about and prepare

What do we mean by example? Would this be a sentence? If not I would suggest a sentence/phrase of the day type thing. How advanced should these be also?

Word:Nombre=Name
¿Qué es su nombre? Mi nombre es X.
What is your name? My name is X.

or...

Word:contaminar=to pollute (as a noun, what is this? Participle?) contaminación=pollution
¿Qué piensa usted de contaminación? Creo que cuando las personas contaminan la tierra, todos sufrimos.
What do you think of pollution? I think that when people pollute the earth, we all suffer.

Well some of the examples I have so far are really basic. For example:

Word:Hund
English:Dog
Example:Jag älskar hundar mer än katt för de kan springa snabbare.
Then in English:I love dogs more than cats because they can run faster.

It's pretty much just a "heres the word in x language and in English, and heres an example sentence (or two I guess) illustrating it in context and heres the English too". It will be clear (hopefully) when you get to the adding form.

I plan to write some more documentation when it's ready for release. I might add that to the list of things to do. Thanks for bringing this up, makes me think.

Okie dokie.

As you can see by the timeline, I have now finished the moderation panel, which means we are now open for filling. Basically what I need are some people to help fill in some words for a language. Please take it seriously and don't just submit half assed words because they won't be approved. I will allow submissions from the general members from now until we have reached one whole language with 30 approved words.

Links:
http://word.langwiki.info/login.php (URL to login - use your forum account)
http://word.langwiki.info/add.php (URL to add words)
http://word.langwiki.info/view.php (URL to view the status of words. We need 30+ 'a' words in one language for me to be able to go on with the rest of the project)
http://word.langwiki.info/list.php (URL to view approved words)

I will contact the wotdp mod(s) and let them know whats happening from now on with the project as far as word additions are concerned.

Should you find any problems, or want another feature, please do let me know.

Ok. So I don't plan to close submissions anytime soon now. I've done all I needed to. The plan list has changed a wee bit and hopefully I can keep up with things. I have decided to remove the support for RSS and iGoogle gadgets. If anyone wants to request any other subscription methods, please let me know.

Seem you have a couple problems with the list of langs. Danish is there twice, in addition to Norwegian (Bokmål) and Norwegian (Nynorsk) there is a Norwegian. There are also a brilliant number of ()s Tongue .

Send me the list, and I'll sort those out for you. Alternately, I have found the problem, and all I can say is ”why do we need two lang codes for Danish?”

Because for some reason we have two flags... Zeme, you can remove the "da" one from the language list. And also, through the dev thingy, you should be able to delete ~/wiki/flags/lang/da.png. Ditto with "no" as we have nn and nb.

Oh yeah and RSS isn't quite going to work with a word of the day.

-"da" is the right Danish code. I'll remove "dk", because it stands for Denmark.
-I would keep "no" because it's the default code for Norwegian when you talk about Norwegian as a whole, without specifying the exact variation. Same with English and its multiple dialects.

Why so? It would be the perfect way of reading it

EDIT: What's the security password!
Hmm, maybe then Nynorsk and Bokmål should be put under no, as no-nn and no-bk or something.

The problem is that it will still leave us with all 3 on any list using func_languageLists.php, whether we want them all or not. Not much way to work around it though.

You need to be careful about changing the codes because anything in the database under those codes will lose their association so to speak. Danish and Norwegian should be okay though, theres not much in thar.
