vinik literally means "man", so cha'vinik means two men, or "the whole second man".
Jun scha'vinik means something like "A digit of the second man", thus 21. chib scha'vinik "Two digits of the second man", 22.

The best way I have come up with describing the counting system of Tsotsil (Trying to change to the more modern spelling) is like so.

There is a single man which has twenty digits, he is one of twenty men of a group, and that group is one of twenty groups.

When you count to twenty, you've counted a whole man.  Go above twenty, and it would be rather odd if a human had more than twenty digits (fingers and toes), thus another person is needed.  Therefore, we are counting the first digit of the second man, then the second digit of the second man, etc, etc until we have counted the whole of the second man, then we add in a third man for counting, then a fourth, then a fifth, etc, etc.

Although, Tsotsil is rather odd in the way they count, it is still fairly similar to the Nahuatl numbers. It is a vegesimal number system based on 20's rather than tens.
